🦥 The Inspiration: Channeling the Inner Sloth
October 20th is International Sloth Day, and sloths have life figured out: they move at their own leisurely pace, conserve their energy, and never expend calories unless absolutely necessary.
Meanwhile, modern humans spend hours every day performing tedious, repetitive digital chores:
Digging through 50 Hacker News or Reddit comments just to find the actual point.
Checking 3 weather websites to decide whether to get out of bed.
Comparing prices across tabs with 20 popups blocking the screen.
Filling out multi-page web forms.
We built SlothSurf to honor the sloth spirit: an autonomous browser agent that navigates the web, scrolls, clicks buttons, extracts key insights, and hands you the answer while you stay comfortable on the couch.
🏄 What is SlothSurf?
SlothSurf is an autonomous web agent that takes high-level instructions (e.g., "Summarize the top 3 tech discussions today", "Find me a budget coffee maker under $25", or "Check the weather and tell me if I have permission to stay in bed") and executes them directly inside a real Chromium browser.
It features:
Interactive Sloth CLI: Complete with ASCII art, real-time step streaming, and lazy presets.
Streamlit Web Dashboard: One-click visual mission launcher with model and slow-motion sliders.
Sloth-Tuned Intelligence: A system prompt focused on conserving actions, taking the most direct clicks, and delivering the absolute bare minimum required to keep you informed.
🔓 Why Open Innovation Matters for What We Built
The hackathon challenged us to put open-source AI at the core. For SlothSurf, the beating heart is browser-use — an open-source agent harness designed specifically for autonomous browser interaction.
Here is why an open-source foundation was strictly superior to closed-source alternatives for this project:
No Black-Box Enterprise Lock-in (and $0 Software License)
Closed enterprise RPA and cloud browser automation platforms (like UiPath or closed browser agent SaaS products) charge hefty monthly subscriptions, restrict you to their proprietary cloud browsers, and gate API access. By building on browser-use and open Playwright standards, SlothSurf is 100% free software that you own, modify, and run on your own machine.
Model Agnostic & Complete Hacker Freedom
Closed automation bots lock you into a single proprietary model. Because our open-source harness utilizes the open standard OpenAI/LangChain client interface, we could seamlessly connect it to xAI's Grok API (grok-2-vision-1212) for rapid visual reasoning, while retaining the freedom to swap to local open-weight models (like Qwen2-VL or Llama-3.2-Vision) with a single environment variable change whenever offline privacy is needed.
Inspectable Actions & Privacy
Web agents interact with cookies, tabs, and personal accounts. With an open harness, every single DOM extraction, screenshot, and coordinate click is transparent in python code — nothing is phone-homing telemetry to a closed corporate vendor.
🛠️ How We Built It
The architecture is clean, decoupled, and fast:

[ Sloth Agent Engine ]
├── Open-Source Agent Harness: browser-use
├── Browser Controller: Playwright (Chromium)
└── Visual Reasoning Engine: xAI Grok API (grok-2-vision-1212)

[ Live Chromium Browser Navigation ]
Key Technologies:
Harness: browser-use — Handles screenshot capture, coordinate mapping, and browser action sequencing.
Brain: grok-2-vision-1212 via the xAI API — Delivers lightning-fast vision grounding and witty, concise answers.
Interface: Rich CLI for terminal lovers and Streamlit for visual desktop users.

🚀 Running SlothSurf Yourself
Want to channel your inner sloth? Clone the repo and run it in 3 steps:
1. Clone & Install
git clone https://github.com/algo-abdullah/slothsurf.git
cd slothsurf
pip install -r requirements.txt
playwright install chromium
2. Add your Grok API key in .env
echo "XAI_API_KEY=your_xai_key_here" > .env
3. Launch the Sloth!
For Terminal CLI:
python main.py
For Web Dashboard:
streamlit run app.py
💤 Conclusion
The future of AI shouldn't just be about working faster; it should be about working less. SlothSurf proves that when you combine community-driven open-source agent harnesses with modern vision APIs, you can build tools that genuinely take the tedium out of daily life.
Stay slow, stay steady, and happy International Sloth Day! 🦥
